Earnest Sewn - New York Showroom

Catherine and I went to meet up with our newest client Earnest Sewn. Their jeans are strong favourites with New York A-listers who want authentic denim. The store on Washington Street in the Meat Packing District opened in 2005 and a second store has recently opened in the very up and coming Lower East Side on Orchard Street.
This is such a fantastic company - with a huge commitment to doing one thing very well - making great products with denim. Scott Morrison formerly the designer / co-founder of paper Denim & Cloth is obsessed by denim, and pays incredible attention to detail. From the fabric used to the process of manufacture - truly impressive.
We had a very friendly welcome from Scott’s new Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy.

Marchesa AW 08 Collection

On Wednesday, Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig presented their new collection downtown at the Chelsea Arts Museum. Catherine and I went along to support them.
There was a huge amount of buzz around the collection - limos lined the street. Inside floor to ceiling drapes of pale grey fabric were used to create an intimate space where models posed on light-boxes and the guest walked through the dramatic spaces created.
The effect was an updated 1950’s couture salon feel - the dresses were beautifully crafted, the detail and make exquisite. I couldn’t help wonder which of these gowns would make it down the red carpet and worn by which celebrities.
These are the sort of dresses that would make most women feel like a star.

Norwood - the new private members club created by Alan Linn.
After a number of years running Blacks in London, Alan Linn has created a new home for New York’s creative talent to hang out.
Situated on 14th Street between 7th and 8th Avenue, Norwood is a welcome addition.
The interior has been created by Modus’ old friend and collaborator Simon Costin.

Backstage Nanette Lepore AW08

Nanette Lepore - Autumn/Winter 2008 - Bryant Park - Wednesday 6th February
Nanette presented her Autumn / Winter 2008 collection. Catherine, Sarah and I were on hand to look after the Brits. Back stage Daisy Lowe filled us in on her recent move to New York and search for an apartment. In the front row was Lorraine Bracco - the Sopranos Shrink, John Slattery from Desperate Housewives but my favourite for all you Trekies was Captain Janeway - Kate Mulgrew.
The collection drew inspiration from the high society party girl -with Nanette’s signature tailoring, prints and evening dresses.

Save the Garment District!

Familiar activity in the Garment District on Wednesday
Nanette also launched her campaign to Save The Garment district. The area is being redeveloped and fashion businesses are being pushed out to make way for expensive residential properties. A manifesto was on each seat with protest badges - Don’t Leave NY Naked, A city without clothes is indecent and sewing is sexy.
“The collection you see on the runway today was designed, cut and sewn in New York City’s Garment District. Yet here in the fashion capital of our country, the factories, trim and fabric shops, are on the verge of extinction,” said Nanette.
“These businesses are currently pushed out by the redevelopment of the neighborhood. We need your support to keep American fashion flourishing in the Garment District,”
“Without these resources, thousands of livelihoods will be at risk. Future generations of designers will no longer have a place to realize their dreams.”

Gucci - A Night To Benefit Raising Malawi And UNICEF

On Wednesday in a tent next to the UN building, Gucci held a fundraising event hosted by Madonna to benefit Malawi and UNICEF.
Haley Newstead from Modus’ florist Absolute Flowers was in town to create the look for the event. Alicia Keyes was singing as I arrived and from the press that I bumped into it sounded like it had been an incredible night.

What The Front Row Are Talking About Today #1 DKNY bicycles
Donna Karen's orange bicycles
Orange bicycles have been discarded all over the city.
These painted orange cycles have been left chained to lamp posts in various prominent fashion places - outside the apple store, near the tents, in SoHo.
I think the idea is to promote the DKNY store. I was hoping that the New Yorkers were following the city of Paris’s example and providing free transport around the city.
