À La Mod[us]: Looks of the Week

image

So I started off this week’s blog so high and mighty with the intention of capturing a profound key theme or two interlinking this week’s picks for best dressed. My eyes began to glaze over as I stared intently at each fabulous image desperately searching for commonalities when it occurred to me that there is, indeed, a theme; or rather, a non-theme theme.

Whether it’s X-ray vision, retina-burning color combinations, statement necklaces or Where’s Wally socks, I challenge you to find another group of people with more individual style than this lot. Well, would you look at that, I made it back to being high and mighty after all.

When You’re a Boy - Simon Foxton

image

Here in the Modus showroom, we regularly prepare send-outs for the legendary stylist Simon Foxton, so when I learnt that there was a retrospective of his work at The Photographer’s Gallery on Ramillies Street I thought I’d brighten up a rainy lunch break and check it out.

The exhibition observes the career of the pioneering stylist whose work clearly contributes as much to an inspirational photograph as the fashion photographer himself. Whilst the Saint Martin’s graduate has famously sourced a lot of his inspiration from the city streets over the years he also appears to have a fantastical side to his stylistic vision when exploring forms of masculinity by throwing anything from fun abstract illusions to sci-fi in to the mix - particularly evident in his collaborations with Nick Knight.

If you are interested in seeing where our samples go after they have left the rails of the showroom and are placed in the hands of an artist, I would definitely recommend a quick viewing.

The exhibition runs until the 4th October with free admission.

À La Mod[us]

image

When you stand in the centre of the showroom at Modus Publicity, blurs of colour vaguely resembling Modus staff members seem to spin around you so quickly it even gives the mannequins vertigo. One afternoon during a particularly rare moment wherein the busy visions of colour stood perfectly still, it occurred to me that we’ve got one seriously stylish group of workers.

Perhaps the proximity to some of London’s most stylish boutiques and chicest city-goers is to thank (but most of us would tell you we were born this hot). Whatever the catalyst was for this phenomenon, the time has come to share this with the world: the Modus crew knows fashion. From this point forward, the looks that shake up Heddon Street every week will be captured and displayed here on Fridays for all style-hungry eyes to feast. Hmm…I think I’m going to need a faster shutter speed…

Margaret Howell SS10 Men’s Paris Presentation

image

In the sweltering Paris heat, iconic British brand Margaret Howell showcased her spring summer 2010 menswear collection in the newly opened Paris store.

Renowned for clothes based on classic British traditions with a modern contemporary feel, this season didn’t disappoint with silhouettes of oversized shirts and fine sea island cotton knits styled with rolled up trousers in fabrications of cotton silk and Fox flannel giving an overall relaxed feel to the collection.

The colour palette offered shades of blue from indigo and chambray to softer shades of pistachio and cream. In addition to the SS10 collection an exhibition of Margaret Howell’s personal selection of campaign photographs from the 1980’s to current day was on display. Working with photographers such as Bruce Weber, Koto Bolofo and Venetia Scott the images clearly highlighted how the brand maintains its heritage and references archive pieces in its current collections.

Graduate Fashion Week 2009

image

The nation’s celebration of brand new fashion talent began yesterday with a buzz as graduate shows from Universities across the country took to the catwalk.
Although a smaller graduating class, Edinburgh’s design students put on a fantastic show with contributors drawing creative inspiration from a wide variety of sources including exotic folk culture and musical genres.

Despite this it was Northumbria University who were the highlight of the day. (Blog Ed: Slight bias detected perhaps?) The students provided a stunning display of artistic and technically precise craftsmanship, wowing spectators with dramatic tailoring and hand beaded and woven masterpieces.

The standard was definitely set for the shows to come throughout the week and the judges on the River Island awards panel were sure to have a tough decision on their hands!

Paul & Joe Beauté Breathless launch and GO CARTING!

image

On Thursday, Paul & Joe Beauté took over The Raceway in Greenwich for a fun, (and ever-so-slightly-competitive!) adrenalin fuelled afternoon of Go-Cart racing with the beauty press.

It was also an opportunity for Craig Ryan French from Paul & Joe Beauté to present their Autumn Sparkles collection, Breathless.

Great racing fun was had by all, with WGSN’s Alice Leeburn burning off the competition and winning the title of Paul & Joe Beauté grand prix champion!
