MAISON MARTIN MARGIELA ‘20’ THE EXHIBITION

Cultural batteries need recharging? Where better to spend some time than walking along the Embankment, before popping into Somerset House for the Maison Martin Margiela ‘20’ exhibition, celebrating 20 years of innovative design.
Displaying a unique eccentricity unseen elsewhere, the exhibition boasts a mixture of installation, film and photography to hair pieces and half mirrored garments, cleverly using lighting and music to create an exceptional ambiance.
The fashion house uses minimalism throughout the entire space, everything and everywhere you look is bright white and quite startling in a refreshing way.
The exhibition is on until the 5th of September, where better to prepare for your fashion week excitement!

THIS SEASON’S UNWITTING STYLE ICON? ANGELA LANSBURY!

What I would call a treat in the PR industry is getting wind of the trends for the season very early on. This week in particular we have been inundated with requests for ‘Granny Chic’. Don’t be put off just yet as the trend has not been dictated by a bunch of jammie-dodger-dunking Octogenarians from the Peak District (kind of wish it was) but by the world’s top designers… what we were all asking ourselves at Modus Towers this week was ‘ who is the inspiration behind this trend?’
Two words immediately sprang to my mind… Bedknobs… Broomsticks…
Okay I hear what you’re saying. Angela Lansbury has not single handedly spawned a global fashion trend from her wardrobe in this Disney classic. Or has she? Here I would like to chart her style history – What soon became apparent were all the nails hit on the head by this grand dame of fashion. Fur… Tick… granny chic… Tick… ’Mad Men’ style… Tick.
When I get an enquiry about full skirts, pussy-bow blouses, twin sets, and cable knits this season I know where my mind will wander to as a point of reference. Forget your catwalk collections and your haute couture.
Angela Lansbury. What a woman.

A LA MODUS… GROW UP / GROW DOWN

There I stood, staring longingly at the door of my flat which I mindlessly locked myself out of. As I waited there - lip quivering, eyes welled with tears - barefooted, in my pajama pants and yesterday’s lopsided ponytail, it occurred to me that I may not be as ‘adult’ as I think I am. I narrowed my options down to two; sleep in the corridor for the next seven days until my flat mate returned from holiday with her key; or beg a helpless passerby to bust open the door with their own brute force. Yes, I agree. It is concerning that I did not ration things out and call a locksmith or my landlord like a civilized grown-up. But in times of desperation, don’t we all secretly just want to cry for our mommies and assume the fetal position?
I contemplated this arguable regression in maturity on my part and got to thinking about what constitutes adulthood. I took a few easy glances around the office and began spotting baby-doll dresses, ringlet curls, pastel polo shirts and disheveled stripes and I decided that there really is no such thing as a ‘grown-up’. We are essentially a bunch of big kids with deeper voices and bigger footsteps. Perhaps we should bare this in mind when we’re carrying the weight of the world on our backs and can’t find an escape. Maybe all we really need to survive “adulthood” is a glass of tepid apple juice and an afternoon nap.

A LA MODUS…WHETHER THE WEATHER

I don’t think anyone knows how to dress in this weather.
I walk to work in the morning clutching my jacket for dear life, fighting back the winds attempt to Marilyn Monroe me to the whole of West London and by mid-day I’m practically melting into my desk chair!
This lot seems to have got it down though – from ladies in their easy-breezy summer dresses to the gents with their rolled up trousers and peek-a-boo socks… It’s looking like whether it’s rain or shine, Modettes can um…weather…the…weather.

MODUS PRESENTS… THE FUTURE OF DIGITAL

Today saw the inaugural event of a new creative forum from Modus – Modus Presents. Modus Presents is designed to focus attention and discussion on subjects we find compelling, inspirational and essential. ‘The Future of Digital: Friend or Foe’ was the first of these events.
It was a bright and early start at The Club at The Ivy this morning, with a diverse cross section from the fashion, beauty, lifestyle and media industries with attendees from the British Fashion Council, Calvin Klein, Jaeger, L’Occitane, Pringle of Scotland and News International to name a few, all gathered to hear our first guest speaker Professor Jonathan Briggs.
Jonathan has 20 years’ experience in the digital field; Jonathan is a founder of Hyper Island - a Digital Media “university”, Strategic Director of the OTHER media, Professor of E-Commerce at Kingston University and has worked with a diverse range of clients, from the V&A and BAFTA to the Royal Academy of Arts and Paul Smith.
His aim today was to clear some of the muddy waters surrounding digital and digital engagement, and advise brands how to recognise and define their digital goals, invest wisely, involve their audience, and most importantly, measure and learn from their experiences. Jonathan was a lively and engaging speaker who enthused his audience, stimulated debate, and was surrounded by inquisitors once the talk had finished.
We ‘re looking forward to the next Modus Presents…

A LA MODUS… HOT IN THE CITY

“Excuse me” I heard a gentleman say to my colleague as we sipped peach bellinis at our favourite after-work joint - piccolino, “I always see the most beautiful women coming out of your building, is it a modeling agency?” I almost spit fruit bits all over the table at the very idea. Then I took a quick scan around at the gaggle of gorgeous Modettes surrounding me in their vintage dresses, funky patterns and killer shoes and realized that, well, they may as well be!
Oh, wipe that look off your face. No one has ever accused a PR of being modest!
