A La Mod[us]

image

Okay. So the dust has finally settled after Modus SS10 Press Day events and it’s time to get back to what’s really important. Friends, family and holiday cheer?

Don’t be silly, I’m talking about Modus looks of the week. The bone-chilling temperatures have done little to weaken the spirit of these Modus fashionistas – the truth is in the colours. Golden yellows and kelly greens, dancing florals and peek-a-boo stripes proved that hibernation is not an option this winter.

With December just around the corner, I’m sure you’re as curious as I am to see what sort of spin is taken on the traditional Christmas looks. Reindeer headbands, perhaps? Not a chance. At least not without a couple dozen glasses of eggnog first…

David Koma’s Celebrity Heaven

image

What an amazing few weeks for David Koma!  Three of the world’s most beautiful, talented and photographed women have shown their genuine admiration and support by choosing to wear David’s dresses for events across the globe within days of each other!
Not only did Cheryl Cole choose to wear a fabulous design from his graduate MA collection (bought exclusively at Browns) for X Factor – currently the most viewed programme on TV, the superstar and icon Beyonce wore a specially designed dress to collect her MTV Award for ‘Best Song’ at the EMA’s in Berlin.  These appearances led to a mass of hype and buzz, with coverage sparking ‘who wore it best’ debates everywhere!!
Just last week Rihanna débuted his striking orange body con dress from the new Spring Summer ’10 collection for her performance at the launch of new cruise liner ‘Oasis of The Seas’

…we’re struggling to decide who wore what best, however we think David’s words sum up a great month, saying, ‘I’m a very happy man right now’!

There is no end to the talents of old time Modus Friend Iain R Webb.  Stylist, photographer, writer, fashion historian, author and now retailer.

Reworking out of date clothing and fabrics into new items; sequin embroidery letters onto army surplus.  Bowie references abound - from the framed doilies to sweatshirt prints.  Choose your own soundtrack while you shop - Neil Diamond always a winner.

*orange snow - a label for people who don’t want to be labelled. New gallery boutique coming soon to 40 Featherstone Street, London EC1Y 8RE.

Modus Loves… Hermes and Liberty

image

There have been so many collaborations in the fashion world over the past few years.  One of my current favourites is the joining of Hermes and Liberty. An extraordinary coupling - the ultimate french luxury house with the quintessential English rose.

The result is beautiful….delicate liberty print cotton scarves and pocket squares printed with those iconic Hermes motifs.

September Issue

The September Issue from Raf Rennie on Vimeo.

The release of The September Issue on DVD has no doubt caused a large number of fashion lovers to discard their Georgina Goodman’s for a night in front of the TV.

Focusing on editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, the film does little to pierce her formidable exterior. It includes too many elongated shots of Anna looking disinterested, or sitting in silence for my liking, but is edited to include some sharp slices of wit.

The September Issue shows off other wonderful characters, including Grace Coddington, who is portrayed as the only person who could possibly overrule a decision of Anna’s…

At first I felt the film was not the insightful triumph I had hoped for. But on reflection, I realise I am probably more addicted to celebrity culture than I thought! The September Issue’s presentation and preservation of Anna as a professional and seemingly flawless icon lacks the “baring-all” of reality television to which viewers are accustomed. This documentary maintains Anna’s image as enigmatic, which I think is for the best - even if I would’ve enjoyed seeing how she picks out her outfit in the morning!

The World According to Tavi…

image

Tavi Gevinson.  You know. The utterly adorable self confessed ‘dork’ that could fit in your pocket she’s so teeny. The next generation of style icons with enviable fashion knowledge. The modern day fashionista or should I say, fashionkneehighsta.
Imagine the list of goals she wrote when she was twelve.

1.    Create a successful blog called Style Rookie. Tick.
2.    Dedicate and film a rap to my idol, Ms Commes Des Garcons herself, Rai Kawakubo. Post it on YouTube.  Leave black rose petals on her doorstep when I have a   spare mo’.  Tick.
3.    Grace the cover of Pop. Tick and Tick!
4.    Front row access to NY Fashion Week. Befriend Alexander Wang. Gwen Stefani will want her photo taken with me.  Wait in line. Grace Coddington is next. Tick.

If we keep producing kids like Tavi the world will be a better place…
